Daybreak is a mobile app providing online community support to assist users in controlling their drinking habits. The app first assesses the user’s drinking habits and general well-being with two self-report questionnaires. It then provides an evaluation of the user current state and corresponding recommendation. Afterwards, users can accesses the community, write their own posts, comment on others’ posts, and see comments they receive. Users can activate “Drink Tracker” to track their drinking and share their progress with the community. In addition, the app features “experiments”, which are many different trainings in various themes intended to improve well-being (e.g., assertive communication, achieving something, relaxation plan). The program also offers an online support chat with a health coach (with a background in health, mental health, or psychology, as stated by the developers). Additional features include tips to help with the recovery process and personalized goal setting.
Daybreak is mostly suitable for users facing mild to moderate problems with alcohol consumption. The focus on social support could be helpful for people who often do not seek out or receive professional support. At the time of review, the community was active. On the downside, at the time of review, some online community features were missing (e.g., the ability to follow a community member). Furthermore, since the program’s focus is on controlling drinking habits, additional information about alcohol consumption could be helpful.
Daybreak could be recommended as a supplement to ongoing treatment for patients dealing with alcohol consumption who may lack social support. Although the program is accessible to any user, it would probably be most beneficial to those who would like to but find it especially difficult to display and share their struggle in person. In these cases, the shield of anonymity might improve patients’ ability to share their struggles in person.
